Creating a Portfolio of Cybersecurity Stocks

Posted: 08/27/2025

This week, Zacks Chief Equity Strategist and Economist John Blank, PhD discusses:

• The second part of John’s look at Cybersecurity industry stocks, a critical Info Tech industry with lots of demand. To begin this discussion, John walks through a helpful Cyber Security Risk Management outline of the key areas of this industry, from Risk Identification and Risk Management to User Awareness and Training to Incident Response and many other topics.

• John then evaluates stocks in this industry using a variety of metrics ranging from Revenue F12M and EPS F12M to Cash Flow Yield %, Free Cash Flow/Net Income and more. Stocks are sorted into Large, Mid, and Small Caps, and highlighted firms include big players like Cisco Systems (CSCO) and Crowdstrike (CRWD), plus smaller, less familiar companies such as Mitek Systems (MITK) and Radware (RDWR).

• Finally, John builds a variety of portfolios using these companies to evaluate the performance of these equities in that context. Not too surprisingly, large cap portfolios offer the best performance—and in one weighting, the portfolio achieves a return of more than 29%! If you’re looking for investing plays in the cybersecurity industry, be sure to watch this informative overview!

S&P 500 Earnings Results for Q2 Are Spectacular. What's Next?

Posted: 08/22/2025

This week, Zacks Equity Strategist Mayur Thaker, CFA, discusses:

• A recap of Q2 earnings for the S&P 500, including analysis of earnings by sector and industry group. Mayur sums up Q2 results as ‘spectacular’, with double digit earnings growth that blew past analyst estimates. Equally impressive is that the growth has come from a variety of sectors, including critical cyclical industries such as retail, banks, industrials, and consumer discretionary.

• In previous quarters, Mayur has noted that most of the index’s growth has come from just seven stocks, the “Magnificent 7” mega-tech group, and he warned about concentration risk. However, in Q2 the growth of the index “ex Mag 7” ( the other 493 companies) is bullish—and promising.

• Mayur looks ahead at earnings forecasts for the rest of 2025 and beyond. He notes that tariff threats are weighing on full year guidance, but also that bullish commentary and strong Q2 results are pushing up Q3 expectations. Mayur also provides technical commentary, notably about highly elevated forward P/E, market momentum, and watching the 10-week Average True Range (ATR). Don’t miss this essential recap of Q2 earnings and a look ahead at the rest of 2025.

Earnings Certain: A Proven-Effective Core Strategy for Any Portfolio

Posted: 08/07/2025

This week, Zacks Equity Strategist Mayur Thaker, CFA, discusses:

• An analysis of the Zacks Earnings Certain Core Strategy, and why it offers the ideal foundation for any investor portfolio. In this presentation, Mayur offers the strategy’s investment philosophy, how it is constructed, and why it serves as the ultimate core strategy. Mayur manages the full Earnings Certain Series (which includes the Admiral and Dividend Strategies in addition to the Core Strategy), and his thesis applies to all three Earnings Certain strategies.

• The Earnings Certain Core Strategy includes 60 of the highest-quality companies in the U.S. large-cap equity market. Quality in this context means that these companies exhibit highly durable business models which can withstand recessions, bear markets, and macroeconomic volatility. As long-term compounders, these firms continuously create shareholder value, making them true buy-and-hold investments—ideal for the core of a portfolio.

• The S&P 500’s gains, especially in recent years, have come from multiple expansion, with the index currently above 23x forward P/E. Mayur sees this as unsustainable, and argues that the index’s returns will rotate from multiple expansion to earnings growth—which is right in the wheelhouse of the companies in our strategies. Watch this week’s video to learn more about the Earnings Certain Strategy Series and how recession-resistant, durable moat-protected, low volatility, and steady compounding companies can deliver a powerful core for any investment portfolio.

Posted: 07/30/2025

This week, Zacks Chief Equity Strategist and Economist John Blank, PhD discusses:

• An overview of Cybersecurity industry stocks in 2025, in John’s continuing analysis of the state of the Info Tech sector. This discussion is broken into two parts: first, the big picture of this critical and constantly evolving industry, and then a look at relevant metrics for tickers in this space, ranging from microcaps to megacaps.

• To begin, John offers a brief primer on the industry. He first describes the various types of cybersecurity, from network to endpoint to cloud to IOT. He also discusses various types of hacking, from “white hat” to “black hat”, and the eye-popping range of cybersecurity threats—from Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) to Man in the Middle (MITM) attacks to the many varieties of phishing. In addition, John presents some useful information and protocols from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

• John then presents a range of charts to illustrate performance metrics for Cybersecurity companies, broken out into market caps ranging from micro-cap to mega-cap. Other companies reviewed in this analysis include major players like Cisco Systems (CSCO) and Palo Alto Networks (PANW), plus smaller, less familiar companies such as Varonis Systems (VRNS) and Radware (RDWR).
